I’VE FINALLY GOTTEN AROUND TO THIS PROMPT BC I LOVE IT. i don’t write AUs too often, so this’ll be new for me! (aka sorry if it sucks a lot) the ending is kind of weird? i hope you like it, though!
Lily Potter liked to bake without magic. It reminded her of the world she’d grown up in, and somehow the end product always seemed to taste better when she knew she’d put a lot of love and a little manual labor into the process. It also gave her something to busy her hands and mind with — when everything simply stirred, poured, and mixed itself, you weren’t left with very much to do.
She glanced over the pan one last time to make sure the cookies were all evenly placed before sliding it deftly into the oven. As soon as the oven door clicked closed, hurried footsteps sounded from the stairs in the other room. A moment later, a tall, lanky boy with hopelessly untidy dark hair and bright green eyes rounded the corner.
Harry stopped dead and looked at Lily with an expression of moderate horror. “Mum,” he said slowly, “you’ve got flour on your face.”
"I have not!" Lily retorted, but she wiped a hand across her cheeks and frowned as she saw that there was, indeed, white flour smeared on her fingers.
"Ginny’s going to be here soon," Harry continued, giving his mother a pleading look. "You will—?"
Lily rolled her eyes and flicked some of the flour at her sixteen-year-old son, smirking. “I’ll make myself presentable, yes. The cookies are in the oven and I’ve put the tea on as well.” She paused. “Your dad’s still out in the broom shed, I think; said something about polishing.”
Harry nodded his thanks and set off, no doubt to find James — who, with any luck, would not be covered in broomstick polish — and scold him for losing track of the time. Lily retrieved her wand from the kitchen table and magicked the flour off her face before waving it at the mess on the countertop, which promptly began to clean itself up. She sat down and watched the objects as they went about their business.
They knew the Weasleys well — they hadn’t, before Harry and Ron had become such good mates, but by now Molly and Arthur had come to be their closest ‘couple friends’, as James liked to refer to them. They were a wonderful family, and Lily had always admired the numerous Weasley children, but recently she’d found that one in particular did not seem to sit well with her at all.
She had heard the news from Molly before Harry told her — either Ron or Ginny (or perhaps both) had written almost immediately to let their mum know about Harry Potter’s new girlfriend. It was three days before Harry sent his own owl (“He doesn’t want to seem too bothered,” James had said and also found very amusing).
Harry had been involved with that Cho Chang the year before, but that had never turned into anything official, and she and James had certainly never met the girl. Lily figured her only son’s first relationship was something to be proud of, but it made her skin prickle strangely. It’s not that she didn’t want Harry to have a girlfriend — she wanted him to be happy, of course — it’s just that the more she thought about it, the more she figured Ginny should have fancied somebody else.
A roaring sound came from the sitting room, and Lily made her way there to see none other than Ginny Weasley herself stepping out of the tall fireplace. She was petite, and much shorter than Harry, with fair skin smattered with freckles and long, flaming ginger hair. Ginny reached up to brush a bit of ash off her shoulder, then caught Lily’s eyes and smiled pleasantly, if somewhat shyly.
Lily smiled back quite convincingly.
"It’s nice to see you, Mrs. Potter," Ginny greeted. She looked around expectantly. "Er — forgive me — Harry is here, isn’t he?”
Just as Lily had opened her mouth to respond, the back door could be heard swinging open loudly and both Harry and James strode into the room. They could’ve nearly been carbon copies of one another. Harry, who’d almost caught up to his father in height now, grinned at the sight of his girlfriend and moved forward to hug her.
James shot Lily a brief look before addressing the couple, “Sorry I kept him from you, he was really quite excited—wouldn’t stop shaking, you know—had to calm him down, get him some fresh air…”
Harry turned on his heel looking murderous, but Ginny laughed appreciatively, her brown eyes shining. “He’s an excitable one, isn’t he?”

"Lily, my darling, there are truly no chocolate chip cookies in this world or the next that compare to yours!" exclaimed James dramatically, throwing his hands into the air before snatching a sixth cookie from the plate that sat between the four that sat at the table.
"They really are delicious," Ginny agreed, her shoulders shaking with suppressed laughter at James’s display.
"Thank you." Lily shifted in her seat and chewed the inside of her cheek, wondering where to begin. "So — you have O.W.L.s this year, don’t you?"
But the rest of the word was swallowed by Harry, who had received a sharp elbow to the ribcage. Ginny grinned devilishly at him. “I can speak for myself, you prat,” she said. “Yeah, I do. Studying’s been a nightmare, though I suppose it can’t really be helped — well, unless you’re Fred and George, that is.”
Damn. So she wasn’t a slacker. “Do you study a lot?” asked Lily, sounding as innocently interested as she could manage.
"The average amount, I think. Hermione — Granger, you know — has been tutoring me a bit, and she’d like it if I lived and breathed O.W.L.s prep, but it’s quite difficult on top of regular schoolwork and Quidditch."
"We’ve seen you fly," James enthused, obviously eager for the conversation to turn to Quidditch, "the times we’ve come to watch Harry this year. You’re brilliant with a broom. I was a Gryffindor chaser myself, y’know."
"Blimey, thanks!" Ginny looked surprised, but pleased all the same. "Of course I know! Your name’s all over Gryffindor’s old Quidditch trophies. I practically have those memorized; Filch’s made me clean them loads of times."
"She’s got a mean Bat-Bogey Hex," Harry explained, his mouth twitching at the look of pride that washed over his father’s face.
James put a hand to his heart and looked at Ginny in awe. “Bless you.”
"Right," chirped Lily, "so you—how are your marks?"
Harry seemed to have caught on to Lily’s game, and he narrowed his eyes, glaring daggers at her. If Ginny noticed any of this, though, she remained remarkably unfazed, instead answering Lily’s question without missing a beat.
"They’re decent." She nodded, and some of her bright red hair fell in front of her eyes. "Divination’s rubbish, of course, and Care of Magical Creatures is a chore — pretty sure Hagrid’s Blast-Ended Skrewts were bred illegally — but I do really enjoy Defense and Transfiguration."
"Lovely," Lily replied, her voice sounding small. She was running out of things to ask, and Ginny had given perfectly satisfactory answers to all of the questions she’d posed thus far. She felt like a particularly proud balloon that had been poked with a pin and was now deflating rapidly — Lily could almost hear the air whooshing out of her metaphorical balloon-self.
"Potions is much better now that we’ve got Slughorn," Ginny continued. "He’s very fond of you, Mrs. Potter. If I didn’t know better I might even think he fancied you. He said I reminded him of you, once," she finished, grinning proudly.
The last of the air left balloon-Lily with a pitiful squeal. The real Lily sat and stared at the girl across from her. She bit her lip as she contemplated what to say next.
"You know, say what you will about old Slughorn, but he’s rarely mistaken about a student," she finally conceded, returning Ginny’s smile with a wide grin of her own. "And considering how I was with him in school, it sounds like you’ve given him a run for his money."
